BYD’s plugin vehicle sales continue to increase. Like the overall EV market globally, and leading the overall EV market globally, BYD sales have been growing and growing and growing. After years of trailing Tesla but being by far the closest to the company in fully electric vehicle sales, BYD passed Tesla in the 4th quarter of 2024, and now it is zipping away from the US automaker at hyperspeed as Tesla sales drop and BYD sales keep on rising. Let’s jump into BYD’s June numbers for a closer look at the latter.
Looking at BYD’s overall plugin passenger vehicle sales (cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs that can charge by plugging into an electricity outlet), we can see that they’ve been gradually rising month after month recently. That seems par for the course in this part of the year for BYD — but at a higher level than in previous years. Overall, they were up 11% over June 2024, while January–June 2025 sales were up 31.5% over January–June 2024 sales.
It’s a similar story just looking at fully electric vehicle (BEV) sales, but with the increases a bit higher. They were up 42.5% in June year over year (YoY), and they were up 40.9% in January–June YoY. Those are actually huge increases in sales, especially considering they were already starting from a high base.
On the flip side, plugin hybrid sales actually declined. So, even as the company’s overall sales and BEV sales have solidly reached #1 globally, the somewhat gas-backed-up plugin hybrids that some people criticize BYD for actually declined a bit. And that’s the 3rd month in a row of declining PHEV sales. Overall, its PHEV sales were down 12.5% in June 2025 YoY, while they were up 23.7% in January–June 2025 YoY.
To wrap up, here’s a look at all three of those groupings in one chart. The big breaks or drops in sales come at the beginning of each year during the big Chinese New Year celebrations, and sales shoot up at the end of each year. It’s hard to pick out middle-of-the-year months in this combined chart, but you can easily do so in the interactive version below (best viewed and toyed with on a real computer, not a phone).
Any other big takeaways from BYD’s sales news?
Oh, also, BYD’s vehicle deliveries outside of China reached 90,049 units in June. Perhaps we should start covering the trends in those export sales as well? Frankly, even BYD’s non-China sales would beat the vast majority of automakers’ plugin vehicle sales globally.
